is personal for Rep. Sue Schafer.

“When I was 15 years old in the 60s and approached my high school principal to play on the tennis team, I was told that this was impossible and that we’d never have girls sports because girls were too fragile and weak to compete,” she said.

“This experience ignited a determination for equal opportunity that has lasted throughout my life.”

Schafer, D-Wheat Ridge, is one of the sponsors of a resolution to be heard at 9 a.m. Friday at the legislature honoring the 40th anniversary of passage of Title IX and the Championship coming to Denver. Title IX, which became law in 1972, directed public schools to provide equal opportunity for females in sports.

Schafer served as the Title IX supervisor at the Colorado Department of Education for eight years and on the Colorado High School Activities Association executive committee.

She still plays a mean game of tennis.

“Tennis taught me things about life: physical endurance, strategic thinking, mental acumen and competition” she said in an interview with The Denver Post in 2010.
